Our Fundraising Policies and Procedures

Martin de Porres Youth and Family Services, Inc. is registered as a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation with the Internal Revenue Service. As such, the organization files an IRS Form 990 annually with the IRS. Martin de Porres Youth and Family Services, Inc. is registered as a charitable organization with the NYS Charities Registry of the NYS Attorney General’s Office and annually files Form CHAR 500, as required by law. All fundraising efforts of the organization are to be approved by the Board of Directors. Major fundraising activities such as galas will be organized by a committee consisting of Board and Staff members. All fundraising activities are to be compliant with applicable law and follow ethical fundraising principles such as transparency and honest communication, using photos of people only with prior permission, never using photos of minors, and respects donors who wish to remain anonymous. Following any fundraising activity, the administration will examine the cost of the fundraising activity compared to the amount of funds actually raised in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the activity for the future. The results of this analysis will be reported to the Board of Directors. All donors will be provided with a letter of appreciation appropriate for IRS purposes.

MDPYFS endorses the Donor Bill of Rights created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. These rights are as follows:

  • To be informed of the organization’s mission, how it will use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for the intended purposes.
  • To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  • To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  • To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  • To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  • To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  • To expect that all relationships with individuals representing the organization of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  • To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees, or hired solicitors.
  • To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  • To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful, and forthright answers.
