Hey there, future college students! π
Congratulations on this exciting chapter of your life! We know the college application process can seem like an exhilarating rollercoaster ride, but fear not, we’re here to guide you through every twist and turn! π’π
Step 1: Discover Your Dream College π
You’re about to embark on an epic journey, so let’s begin by exploring colleges that match your interests, goals, and values. Chat with counselors, attend college fairs, and dive into online research to find your perfect match! Sit down with your trusted advisors and craft a list of schools that spark your interest. Include both public and private institutions, near and far. Consider your passions and career goals while narrowing it down to around 10-15 schools.
Rank Your Wants and Needs π
What do you desire from your college experience? Big 10 excitement with a vibrant campus scene or a cozy liberal arts setting? Figuring this out will help refine your list to find your ideal match. After you draft up the perfect list, go beyond the web and venture onto the campuses that make your heart sing! Experience the culture, chat with faculty, and imagine yourself thriving there. Campus visits bring clarity to your decision and fuel your college dreams! β¨
Step 2: Rally the Champions π
Enlist the support of your biggest fans – the teachers, counselors, or managers who truly know your brilliance. Make a list of potential letter writers, and ask those who’ve seen your magic in action. For college, seek teachers you excelled with or your trusted counselor. Applying for grad school? Approach professors in your field. Job hunting? Former managers are golden!
Prep Your Brag Sheet π
Show off your achievements with a resume or brag sheet. Let them know your top grades, standout projects, and career aspirations. This is your time to shine! Include extracurriculars, volunteer work, and goals for the future. Be bold and celebrate your wins! Finish strong by acing the ask! Request your recommendation letter in person, then follow up with a formal email (Emails help old people remember things!). Remind your cheerleaders before the due date, and thank them for their support. Make sure to give your adults 4 -6 weeks of time to write your letter for you. These are busy adults who need to create time for you! A last minute ask is the quickest way to receive a βNoβ
Step 4: Decode the Finances π°
Understanding financial aid options is crucial! Get cozy with FAFSA and other resources. Don’t let financial hurdles stand in your way; explore scholarship opportunities and college-specific aid programs.
While dreams donβt have a price tag, college certainly does, and if you find yourself in the scholarship free boat like many college freshmen, donβt fret! Understand the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized student loans, which you will be taking out.
Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans are federal student loans offered by the U.S. Department of Education to help eligible students cover the cost of higher education. Direct Subsidized Loans are available to undergraduate students with financial need, and the U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on the loan while you are in school at least half-time, during the grace period after leaving school, and during deferment. On the other hand, Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to both undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of financial need, and students are responsible for paying the interest on these loans at all times.
To be eligible for either type of loan, you must be enrolled at least half-time at a participating school and be in a program that leads to a degree or certificate. Direct Subsidized Loans are only available to undergraduates with financial need, while Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to both undergraduate and graduate or professional degree students, regardless of financial need.
To apply for a Direct Loan, you need to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, and your school will determine your eligibility for student aid, including Direct Loans, as part of your financial aid package.
Step 5: Showcase Your Best Self π
