Quick Coping Strategies to Combat Stress

by | Apr 8, 2024

We know that life can sometimes feel like a rollercoaster, leaving you feeling frazzled and overwhelmed through its ups and downs. But fear not – we’ve got some awesome stress-busting strategies to help you conquer those rough patches with confidence and resilience.

Mindful Moments:
Stress is something that creeps up on you progressively during your daily and weekly activities and one of its tactics is getting you feeling overwhelmed. To combat this, when you notice yourself feeling overwhelmed check in with your nervous system! What is going on with your five senses? What are you seeing? Feeling? Touching and tasting? This is a grounding activity that actually helps you to calm down and will allow you to enter a headspace where you can be more mindful of moments that are happening now instead of what is happening at the end of your seemingly endless task list. Take a moment, check out from your load of classes or work-day, and observe that right now you’re safe, ok, and are probably actually managing pretty well.

Embrace the Power of Positivity:
Your thoughts have a serious impact on your emotional well-being, so why not use this impact to boost your mood and reduce stress? Cultivate a positive mindset by focusing on the things you’re grateful for, practicing self-compassion, and reframing negative thoughts into more positive ones. By adopting a glass-half-full mentality, you can cultivate resilience and optimism, even in the face of life’s challenges.

Sweat it Out:
Exercise isn’t just great for your physical health – it’s also a powerful stress-buster that can help you blow off steam and boost your mood. Whether it’s going for a run, hitting the gym, or practicing yoga, engaging in regular physical activity can help release pent-up tension, increase feel-good endorphins, and promote a sense of well-being. So lace up those sneakers and get moving – your body and mind will thank you for it!

Reach Out and Connect:
When life gets tough, it’s easy to shut down,  isolate and try to solve everything yourself. But seeking support from friends, family, and trusted confidants can be instrumental in helping you cope with stress and navigate life’s challenges. Don’t be afraid to reach out and lean on your support network when you need it most. Whether it’s a heart-to-heart chat with a loved one, a group therapy session, or simply spending time with friends, connecting with others can provide comfort, validation, and perspective during difficult times.

Practice Self-Compassion:
Be kind to yourself, especially when life feels overwhelming. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a dear friend facing a similar struggle. When faced with an intrusive thought, try putting that thought on trial and see if it truly has any legs to stand on or whether or not this is just a baseless fear attacking you. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment, practice self-care, and give yourself permission to prioritize your well-being. Remember, you’re doing the best you can with the resources you have, and that’s worthy of celebration.

Managing stress isn’t always easy, but with the right strategies and support, you can navigate life’s choppy waters with grace and resilience. By embracing mindfulness, cultivating positivity, prioritizing exercise, seeking support, and practicing self-compassion, you can empower yourself to weather life’s storms and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before. So take a deep breath, anchor yourself in the present moment, and trust in your ability to navigate whatever challenges come your way. You’ve got this!
